Big Tech firms, Wall Street Lead Job Cuts In Corporate America

Big Tech firms and Wall Street titans are leading a string of layoffs across corporate America as companies look to rein in costs to ride out the economic downturn. Rapid interest rate hikes, weak consumer demand and an economic slowdown in China have forced firms such as Amazon, Walt Disney, Facebook-owner Meta and American banks to trim their workforce. As a pandemic-led demand boom rapidly fades, tech companies shed more than 150,000 workers in 2022, according to tracking site Layoffs.fyi, and more layoffs are expected as growth in the world's biggest economies start to slow. Here are some of the job cuts by major American companies announced in recent weeks. TECHNOLOGY, MEDIA AND TELECOM SECTOR Spotify Technology SA: Music streaming service Spotify is cutting 6 per cent of its workforce, or roughly 600 roles. Alphabet Inc: Alphabet Inc is eliminating 12,000 jobs, its chief executive said in a staff memo. Microsoft Corp: The US tech giant said it would cut 10,000 jobs

Police Surround Suspect In California Mass Shooting: Reports

Police were involved in a stand-off with the man they believe was responsible for killing 10 people in a mass shooting during Lunar New Year celebrations in California, media reports said Sunday. Aerial footage showed a white transit van hemmed in by two armored police vehicles, while a large number of police cars stood nearby in Torrance, south of Los Angeles. The development came as Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department released images of the man they are looking for. Images, apparently from surveillance cameras, show an Asian man wearing a beanie hat and glasses. The plane had earlier been escorted by Hungarian warplanes, the official added. The plane landed at an isolated location at Athens International Airport shortly before 1600 GMT and was under inspection by a bomb disposal team, state news agency ANA said. It was not immediately clear who made the bomb claim. The Fight For Abortion Rights "Isn't Over" In US, Says Joe Biden

The fight for abortion rights "isn't over," US President Joe Biden said Sunday, 50 years after a landmark Supreme Court ruling had guaranteed that right, before the court reversed itself in June. "Today should've been the 50th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade," the Democratic president said on Twitter, referring to the original ruling. "Instead, MAGA Republican officials" -- supporters of former president Donald Trump, with his Make America Great Again slogan -- "are waging a war on women's right to make their own health care decisions." Biden added: "I haven't stopped fighting to protect women's reproductive rights - and I never will." His powers to affect abortion rights, however, are relatively limited, with the battle mostly going on now at the state level. The Supreme Court's stunning reversal in June came after three Trump-appointed justices gave conservatives a high-court majority. Since then, some 20 Repu
