Bangladesh Ex Army General Arrested Over Fake 'Biden Adviser' Connection

Bangladesh police on Tuesday arrested a former army general who allegedly prompted a Bangladeshi-American national to appear before the media, identifying himself as a close "advisor" to US President Joe Biden and convey his administration's support for a regime change in the country. "We have arrested former Lt General Chowdhury Hasan Suhrawardi from (suburban) Savar and brought him to our office for initial interrogation and subsequent legal procedures,” police's detective branch chief Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid told reporters. Rashid said the former general was the accused no. 2 of a case relating to the fraudulence, under which so-called Biden adviser Mian Zahidul Islam Arefy now awaits trial on charges of fraudulence and instigating anarchy in Bangladesh. On Saturday, Suhrawardi escorted Arefy to the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party's (BNP) central office in Dhaka where he spoke before a group of reporters alongside party activists as the US pres

Actor Matthew Perry was found dead at his home in Los Angeles on Saturday. He was 54. First responders found Perry unconscious in a hot tub at his house and were unable to revive him.  His family in an exclusive interview with People spoke about the star's death. "We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother," the family says. "Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend." They add, "You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love." Mr Perry was best known for his portrayal of the wise-cracking Chandler Bing on the wildly popular "Friends," which ran for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004. "Friends" followed the lives of six New Yorkers navigating adult life, dating and careers. It was a mainstay of NBC's much-vaunted 1990s and early 2000s television lineup and drew a massive global following.  During the height of his success, Perry battled for

US Mass Shooter Was "Hearing Voices, Suffering From Paranoia": Police

Police in Maine said Saturday that the man who gunned down 18 people at a bar and a bowling alley and later committed suicide, suffered serious mental health issues, but was able to buy weapons legally because he had never been forcibly committed to treatment. The body of Robert Card, a 40-year-old army reservist, was discovered Friday night inside a tractor trailer near a recycling center where he used to work, said Maine public safety commissioner Mike Sauschuck. Card had shot himself. Investigators are still struggling to determine Card's motive for carrying out Wednesday's massacre in the town of Lewiston. However, Mike Sauschuck said that Card had reportedly been hearing voices and suffering from paranoia. "Clearly there's a mental health component to this," Mr Sauschuck told reporters. Investigators found a "paper-style" note that Card had left to a loved one which contained a password to his phone and bank account information, Mr Sauschuck sa

Russia Launches "Special Operation" In Ukraine, Says Suspected Spy Killed

Russia said Friday that it killed a suspected Ukrainian spy and shut down two pro-Kyiv online outlets during an operation in the occupied part of Ukraine's southern Zaporizhzhia region. Since seizing control of large swathes of Ukraine last year, Russia has claimed to have foiled repeated acts of alleged sabotage as it tries to crack down on pro-Ukrainian resistance among the local population. "As a result of a special operation in the territory of Zaporizhzhia region, the Federal Security Service suppressed the activities of three large agent groups coordinated by Ukrainian intelligence," the Federal Security Service   said in a statement. One man it suspected of working for Ukrainian intelligence was killed in a gunfight during the operation, the FSB said, without providing further details. The administrators of a pro-Ukrainian chat room and a media outlet in the Russian-controlled city of Melitopol were detained, it added. It said the administrators persuaded resi

3 Migrants Killed In Shootout Near Serbia-Hungary Border

Three people were killed and another wounded in a shooting between migrants on Friday near Serbia's border with Hungary, state-run television RTS reported. The shooting happened at an abandoned farm complex near the border village of Horgos, a place where migrants trying to enter European Union member Hungary will often camp, RTS said. Police forces were sent to the area, but did not immediately issue a statement over Friday's incident. The region has seen a series of clashes between smuggling gangs and migrants in recent months, sometimes deadly. Serbia lies on the so-called Balkans route used by hundreds of thousands of EU-bound people in 2015 and 2016, many fleeing war and poverty in Africa, Central Asia and the Middle East. After the route was officially shut down in 2016, migrants seeking to enter western Europe continued to use it -- although in far lower numbers. In September, nearly 400 migrants were detained in northern Serbia and transferred to reception centres

"Why Do People Do This?": 10-Year-Old US Shooting Witness

Riley Dumont flung herself on top of her daughter when a gunman opened fire in a bowling alley in a shooting spree in Maine that left 18 people dead. "It felt like it lasted a lifetime," Dumont told ABC News of Wednesday evening's attack at the bowling alley in the town of Lewiston. Dumont said her father, a retired police officer, erected a barricade when the shooting began using "tables and a big bench." "I was laying on top of my daughter," she told ABC. "My mother was laying on top of me. I just remember people sobbing and crying." Law enforcement were searching on Thursday for the gunman who opened fire in the bowling venue and then a bar about a 10-minute drive away in the deadliest mass shooting in the United States this year. Robert Card, 40, a certified firearms instructor and US Army reservist, should be considered armed and dangerous, police said. Zoey Levesque, 10, told ABC News that she was at the alley with her mother, Meg

Five Dead, Including 3 Children, In Canada Shooting

Canadian police found five people dead from gunshots, including three children and the alleged shooter, at two border city residences in a case described on Tuesday as "intimate partner violence." The victims were discovered late Monday in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, near the juncture of three Great Lakes bordering the US state of Michigan, about 700 kilometers (430 miles) north of Toronto, after police, received reports of break-ins. A 41-year-old was found "dead from a gunshot wound" at the first residence. "The shooter had fled the area prior to police arrival," said a statement. Ten minutes later, another emergency call saw police head to another home just 3.7 kilometres (2.3 miles) away.  There they found three dead children, aged six, seven and 12 years old, as well as the alleged shooter who appeared to have died "from a self-inflicted gunshot wound." Another victim, aged 45, was also found injured with a gunshot wound and was taken to

Hamas Likely To Release 50 Hostages With Dual Citizenship: Reports

Hamas might release 50 of more than 200 hostages they kidnapped in brutal October 7 attacks in Israel, several reports claimed. Red Cross representatives are allegedly on their way to Gaza to take out the hostages with dual nationalities, they alleged. The development came against the backdrop of a report by the New York Times earlier today that said Hamas was exploring the possibility of releasing hostages who hold foreign passports. On Friday, Hamas, while releasing two Americans Judith Tai Raanan and her daughter Natalie Shoshana Raanan, had said it was working with Qatar and Egypt to free its "civilian" hostages, in a sign that more releases could follow. The American mother and daughter were seized from the Nahal Oz kibbutz near the Israel-Gaza border on October 7. They were reportedly on holiday in Israel at the time. Israel says the Hamas operatives seized 222 hostages in the worst attack in the nation's 75-year history. With the Israel military saying it had

Israel Posts Pic Of Girl Who Can Only Sleep In Storage Unit After Attack

Exposure to violent conflict can produce fear, horror, and lifelong trauma in young children. As the Israel-Hamas war intensifies, the conflict is taking a horrendous toll on children from both regions. Several heartwrenching visuals of children crying, running through the streets, and cowering in bomb shelters after airstrikes have surfaced online. Now, another heartbreaking image of a scared little girl hiding in a storage unit after surviving the Hamas attack has gone viral. The official X handle of Israel shared the girl's picture and stated that she can only fall asleep by hiding in a storage unit for linen. The girl is so traumatized that she can no longer sleep in her own bed.  ''This little eight-year-old girl can only fall asleep by hiding in a storage unit for linen. That's how she and her younger brother survived for hours during the Hamas massacre when terrorists went door to door in Kibbutz Alumim murdering entire Israeli families. Since then she no longe

Taiwan Defends Tech Giant Foxconn Over China's Tax Investigation

Taiwan defended tech giant Foxconn on Monday after China launched an investigation into several of the firm's sites, saying that Taiwanese businesses should not be subjected to "political interference". Chinese authorities are inspecting Foxconn's sites in southern Guangdong province and Jiangsu in the east, as well as carrying out on-site investigations into the company's land use in central Hunan and Hubei provinces, China's state-run Global Times reported Sunday. It did not specify what authorities are looking into, nor any offences that Foxconn may have committed. Taiwan-based Foxconn is one of the world's largest contract producers of electronics, and a key supplier for Apple's iPhones. The investigation comes as self-ruled Taiwan -- which Beijing claims as its territory and has vowed to seize one day -- prepares for presidential elections in January. Taiwan's Deputy Premier Cheng Wen-tsan said on Monday that Beijing's aim is to "

5,000 Killed In Israeli Strikes On Gaza, 40% Of Them Children, Says Hamas

In a televised briefing, Israel military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said that the country's ground forces carried out some raids inside Gaza . He said that the raids had been conducted by the "armoured and infantry" battalions. Elaborating on the incursions that went "deep" into Gaza, Hagari said, "During the night there were raids by tank and infantry forces. These raids are raids that kill squads of terrorists who are preparing for the our next stage in the war." He also said the Israeli forces were trying to find information on missing hostages. Over 200 people were taken hostage by Hamas operatives when they infiltrated and attacked cities in southern Israel on October 7.   In retaliation, Israel has pummelled the Hamas-controlled Palestinian territory with air strikes for over two weeks and is also mobilising troops along the Gaza border for a ground offensive. The Israeli military said it had hit "over 320 military target

US Teacher Grabs, Slams Kindergarten Student For Throwing Paper On Ground

In a shocking incident, a teacher from Florida, United States, was arrested after she grabbed and slammed a kindergarten student for throwing a piece of paper, as per a report in the New York Post . Khadijah Tynnettta Muhammad, aged 54, grabbed the child by his neck and threw him to the ground, the police said. On October 10, Ms Muhammad assaulted the kid at Margate Elementary School in Broward County in front of other students and staff. It is to be noted that she did not teach the student. According to the school's surveillance footage, the student was sitting on the floor in the hallway with other students before a class. He then threw a piece of paper in the direction of some of his classmates, as per police. The teacher walked to him and grabbed the boy by his left wrist "in an aggressive manner," police added. As per the arrest report, "She continued to lift him off the ground by his arms, twist his arms and grabbed him by the back of his shirt while shoving

"Coward Fugitive Returning": Imran Khan's Party On Nawaz Sharif's Return

Calling former premier Nawaz Sharif a "national criminal", his immediate successor Imran Khan's party on Saturday said the state has buried shame, modesty, law and justice with its own hands by paving the way for the "coward fugitive" to return home under "judicial asylum". Nawaz Sharif, 73, returned home on a special flight from Dubai, ending a four-year self-imposed exile in the UK, to head his party and try to secure a record fourth term in the general elections expected to be held in January. Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf reacted strongly to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo's return to the country, saying the "coward fugitive is returning under judicial asylum". In a statement on Saturday, a PTI spokesperson said "state has buried shame, modesty, law and justice with its own hands" to pave the way for "national criminal's return" to the country from London. Released 2 American Hostages On "Humanitarian Grounds": Hamas

Gaza's ruler Hamas said Friday its armed wing has released two American hostages, from around 200 captives abducted in attacks by the militant group in Israel on October 7. "In response to Qatari efforts, (Ezzedine) al-Qassam Brigades released two American citizens (a mother and her daughter) for humanitarian reasons," Hamas said in a statement posted on Telegram. The Islamist group did not detail how or when the hostages were released. The Israeli military said earlier Friday that most of those abducted to Gaza were still alive. "The majority of the hostages are alive. There were also dead bodies that were taken... to the Gaza Strip," an army statement said. The military said more than 20 hostages were minors, while between 10 and 20 were over the age of 60. There are also between 100 and 200 people considered missing since the Hamas attacks, the army added. On October 7, the Palestinian militant group carried out a deadly assault on Israel, the worst in

"We Saw Bodies, Limbs Torn Off": Displaced Gazans Recount Horror

Fadwa al-Najjar said she walked for 10 hours with her family from the north of war-torn Gaza to reach a UN camp for displaced Palestinians, witnessing terrifying scenes along the road. "We left the house at 10:00 am and we got here at 8:00 pm," said the 38-year-old who walked 30 kilometres (18 miles) with her seven children after Israel told more than a million Palestinians to move south ahead of an expected ground offensive. Israel has been pounding Gaza since October 7 when Hamas militants stormed into southern Israel killing at least 1,400 people, mostly civilians who were shot, mutilated or burnt to death on the first day of the raid, according to Israeli officials. Since then, more than 4,100 Palestinians, mainly civilians, have been killed in relentless Israeli bombardments, according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry. Najjar said she left the north with nearly 90 members of her extended family who were forced to walk because they couldn't pay the 1,000-sh

Egypt's Cairo Peace Summit May Struggle To Foster Unity On Gaza Conflict

Egypt holds a summit on the Gaza crisis on Saturday amid growing fears of a wider Middle East war but the absence of a top official from Israel's main ally the US and some other leaders has dampened expectations for what it can achieve. The hastily-convened Cairo Peace Summit as the conflict still rages will bring together several Arab and European heads of state and government, alongside foreign ministers. They will meet as Israel readies a ground assault on Gaza following the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas that killed 1,400 people. More than 4,100 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's counteroffensive, amid a growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. There was no word as of 1300 GMT on who would represent the U.S., or whether major powers China and Russia would attend. Egypt has said little about the aims of the gathering, beyond an October 15 statement by the Egyptian presidency that the summit would cover recent developments involving the crisis in Gaza and the future of the Pal

Pak Joins China's Project To Build Research Station On Moon's South Pole

Pakistan has joined China's expanding club of partners in an ambitious project to build a research station on the moon's south pole. Jointly with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Pakistan's caretaker Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar witnessed the signing of an initial cooperation agreement in Beijing on Wednesday. The China National Space Administration said on Friday cooperation would cover areas including the engineering and operational aspects of the Chinese lunar base programme. China, which aims to become a major space power by 2030, has already secured cooperation from Russia, Venezuela and South Africa. It has fixed a target to land its astronauts on the moon by the end of this decade. The timeline to build an outpost on the south pole coincides with NASA's more ambitious Artemis programme, which aims to put U.S. astronauts back on the lunar surface in December 2025, barring delays. AI Capable To Transform Healthcare If Understood Properly: WHO

Artificial Intelligence has the potential to transform health treatment but rapid roll-out without fully understanding how AI performs could end up harming patients, the World Health Organization said on Thursday. The WHO said AI held great promise for healthcare but also came with challenges, notably around privacy and the potential to entrench existing problems. The United Nations' health agency issued a new publication detailing some of the main regulatory considerations on AI for health, so that authorities can build or adapt their guidance on using it. "With the increasing availability of health care data and the rapid progress in analytic techniques -- whether machine learning, logic-based or statistical -- AI tools could transform the health sector," the organisation said. The WHO said AI could strengthen clinical trials, improve medical diagnosis and treatment and supplement medical knowledge and skills. For example, AI could help in places with a lack of spe

"Wash Babies' Blood Off Hands": Israel Envoy To UN Official Over Iran Meet

Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations Gilad Erdan today blasted some of its officials on X, formerly Twitter, and "severed ties" with one who shook hands with a minister of Iran. He accused the United Nations of "living under a rock" and having "blood on its hands". "The UN's support for and legitimization of genocidal terrorists is a threat to civilization!" he wrote in one of his posts. What set the Ambassador off was apparently a post by Martin Griffiths, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator. "The specter of death is hanging over #Gaza. With no water, no power, no food and no medicine, thousands will die. Plain and simple," Mr Griffiths had posted. The comment reflected the UN stance on Israel's warning to people in North Gaza to move south ahead of a widely expected ground attack by the Israeli forces. "Have you been living under a rock? Stanford Lecturer Suspended For Allegedly Calling Israelis "Colonisers"

Stanford University in the United States has suspended a lecturer for allegedly describing Israelis as "colonisers" and asking Jewish students in his class to stand in the corner. According to the New York Post , Israeli students on the campus said that the lecturer, whose identity hasn't been revealed, opened two freshman classes on Tuesday by saying the lesson would be colonialism. He then went on to make Jewish students stand in a corner while branding them "colonisers", downplayed the Holocaust and also called Hamas operatives "freedom fighters".  Citing the San Francisco Chronicle , the Post reported that the lecturer blamed the ongoing war between Hamas and Israel on "Zionists" - supporters of a movement for the protection of an independent Jewish state. He reportedly justified the killings of more than 1,300 Israelis by Hamas gunmen over the weekend, saying that it was part of Palestinians' resistance.  One student said that the

"Always Advocated" Independent Palestine At Peace With Israel, Says India
